Harry and Meghan named baby daughter to ‘secure the Sussex brand’, claims expert

Her name pays homage to Prince Harry's grandmother

| Updated:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly name their baby daughter Lilibet to “secure the Sussex brand”, an expert has claimed.

The Duke and Duchess welcomed their second child, who they sweetly named after the Queen, last week.

Following the tot’s arrival, Angela Mollard has said her name may have been chosen for a specific reason.

According to the royal columnist, the couple chose Lilibet in order to keep close links with the palace.

Angela appeared on The Morning Show in Australia to discuss the pair.

She said: “I imagine they used the name Lilibet to secure the brand, the Sussex brand, to make that connection to the palace.”

Furthermore, the expert added: “It’s a personal name.

“It’s a name that Philip obviously called Elizabeth. It’s too close.

“But could you imagine if the Queen had said no, they could have gone on Oprah and [complained], ‘Yeah, she wouldn’t let us use that name.'”

Harry and Meghan hit back at name reports

Meanwhile, it follows shortly after the pair hit back at claims they ‘didn’t ask’ the Queen for permission to use the name.

A spokesperson for the couple told the BBC: “The Duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement, in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called.

“During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honor.

“Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”

The statement followed shortly after a royal biographer called the decision “rude” and “demeaning”.

Angela Levin said on Good Morning Britain this week: “I don’t think it’s a good idea, I think it’s quite rude to her Majesty the Queen.

“It was a very private nickname from her husband [Prince Philip] who hasn’t been dead for very long.”

Furthermore, she added: “Prince Charles would never dream of referring to his mother as Lilibet.

“It was a special name [for] the Duke of Edinburgh. I think it’s quite demeaning.”

Despite the reports, Harry and Meghan are currently enjoying time at home with their little one.

Following Lili’s birth, it’s believed the pair could take 20 weeks off work.

Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie, who’s friends with the Sussexes, said on Good Morning America: “Harry and Meghan are leading by example with their Archewell foundation. They offer up to 20 weeks parental leave for mother and father.”
