Derek died earlier this year

Kate Garraway candidly opened up about her “dark turn” following the death of husband Derek.

Derek died earlier this year at the age of 56 following his years-long battle with complications relating to Covid-19. The late dad-of-two shared daughter Darcey and son Billy with GMB host Kate.

And earlier this month, Kate stepped out for her first event since Derek’s death – where she praised her colleagues for “helping her survive”.

Kate recently attended the Variety Club Showbusiness Awards. At the glitzy do, Kate even scooped an award for her Outstanding Contribution to TV and Radio.

Ben Shephard introduced his former ITV co-star Kate to pick up the award on stage. He said: “We’ve worked together, on and off, for 24 years. I’m much better at what I do because I worked alongside Kate Garraway.”

Kate then thanked her pals and who supported her throughout Derek’s battle and death. She said: “When you do go through something tough, you find out where the goodness is.”

Praising her Global colleagues, Kate went on: “The energy and fun is just fantastic. But when things take a dark turn, suddenly you see this amazing side of people who not only help you go on air every day and look half-decent doing your show but also come round and keep you going and help you survive.”

Kate Garraway celebrates birthday

It comes as Kate celebrated her 57th birthday over the weekend, however, it was an occasion tinged with sadness following her husband Derek’s death.

On Saturday (May 4) Kate turned 57. Taking to Instagram, Kate shared a video of her friends and family singing Happy Birthday, before she blew out the candles on her cake.

“Well yesterday was another one of those sad 1sts – my first birthday since Derek’s passing,” she captioned the post.

“Woke up feeling so sad & thought well I can either cry all day or celebrate life as he did so well. And thanks to wonderful friends it worked! See you on @gmb tomorrow from 6 – happy bank holiday weekend everyone!” she then added.
