Making a Murderer’s Steven Avery to marry girlfriend he only met last week

Convicted killer, subject of hit Netflix series to wed legal secretary Lynn Hartman

He only met her in person for the first time last week but Steven Avery is set to marry his girlfriend of eight months.

The 54-year-old’s attorney confirmed to Us Weekly that the subject of the Netflix hit series Making a Murderer is to wed Las Vegas legal secretary Lynn Hartman.

Kathleen Zellner said: “Steven Avery’s engagement to Lynn is one bright spot in an otherwise unbelievably tragic and unfair life story.

“Cheers to both of them.”

The attorney also told People: “Steven deserves every bit of happiness that comes his way.

“He is very much in love and happy with Lynn so we are happy for them.”

The couple have only been dating for eight months, after they started corresponding via letters and phone calls. And Lynn only met her future husband in person for the first time last week when she went to visit him in Wisconsin’s Waupun Correctional Institute.

Steven told the Daily Mail: “She’s going to be my future wife. We’ll be laughing forever.

“I’m happy, she treats me decent, she loves me, she’s kind of spoiling me right now.

“I just want to be happy and enjoy my life. I think I did enough time.”

According to the Daily Mail, Lynn confirmed the good news in a post that no longer seems to be on the Steven Avery Project Facebook page.

She reportedly said: “I am very happy to announce that Steven Avery asked me to marry him today, and I accepted.

“It has been a difficult road getting to this point in our lives but we are very happy.

“Despite all obstacles, and Steven’s wrongful conviction and incarceration, we plan to be married shortly after he is released.”

It’s a bright spot for Steven who is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.

Both Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey were convicted of the crime back in 2007, although they professed their innocence.

In August a federal judge ruled that Brendan’s conviction be overturned.

Steven’s case gripped the world when the true crime series Making a Murderer was released on Netflix in December 2015.

Many fans believe that he was wrongfully convicted. At the time of Teresa Halbach’s murder he was free after already serving 18 years in prison for a sexual assault that he did not commit. In 2003, DNA evidence proved he was innocent of that crime.

Earlier this month Steven’s ex-fiancée, Sandra Greenman, told the Daily Mail that the series had turned him into an unlikely sex symbol.

She said: “For a while he was getting 40 letters a day. Some of these women are falling at his feet. They want to be a celebrity.

“He’s never had women after him like this. He’s the strangest sex symbol you’ll know.”
