Carol Kirkwood apologises for Sir David Attenborough blunder on BBC Breakfast

What would Sir David think?

Carol Kirkwood has apologised for an embarrassing blunder she made while presenting on BBC Breakfast this week.

The weather expert, 56, thanked one of her fans who corrected her on Twitter by pointing out a mistake she made on the show.

Carol got her TV legends mixed up when talking about the research vessel RRS Sir David Attenborough – the boat that was famously nearly called Boaty McBoatface after the Natural Environment Research Council called on the public to suggest names.

Instead of referring to the documentary-maker and undisputed national treasure with whom the boat shares its name, Carol accidentally referred to his late actor brother, Sir Richard Attenborough.

One viewer tweeted to BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker: “Did Carol Kirkwood call Boaty McBoatface the Sir Richard Attenborough? Think Sir David won’t be chuffed!”

Another user wrote: “Okay, yes Carol Kirkwood did say Sir Richard Attenborough, not Sir David Attenborough. But she’s on live telly. So I thought I’d help out by stealth-correcting.”

Carol confessed that she hadn’t noticed the mistake when she made it, replying: “Yikes! Didn’t realise I had said that! Sorry! Thanks for correcting me.”

After she apologised, the Twitter user told her there was “no need” to say sorry.

Presenting live on telly is undoubtedly a high-pressure affair but Carol normally breezes through her reports on the breakfast show.

However, she’s no stranger to slip ups.

There was a moment in 2017 when Carol appeared to forget the name of one of the show’s veteran anchors, Louise Minchin.

After presenting her weather report, she referred back to the anchors and said, “Dan and…”.

After hesitating for a second, she added “Louise”, looking both puzzled and more than a little apologetic.

There was another awkward moment in the show this week. On Wednesday (April 3rd), Louise delivered her weather report perfectly clearly to viewers, but Dan in the studio appeared to mishear the meterologist because of her Scottish accent.

Looking for clarification, a confused Dan asked: “Was that ‘northerly wind’ or ‘nobbly wind’? I think I’ve [had a] bad night’s sleep Carol, sorry.”
